idD Portugal Defence welcomes the NIAG in Portugal!

The NATO Industrial Advisory Group was established in 1968 with the aim of promoting a link between the defence industries of the NATO nations, ensuring a more assertive and effective approach and update of industry and technology in NATO activity.

The NIAG is a high-level consultative and advisory body – acting as a focal point and spokesperson for industries, national defence and security associations with NATO.

The event will start with the Industry Day on 28 of November.

Plenary meetings will take place on 29 and 30 of November,

28.11 _ Industry Day

The Industry Day – organised by idD Portugal with the support of Vila Nova de Gaia City Council – will be dedicated to the presentation of products and services of the Portuguese Defence Technological and Industrial Base, aiming to create new business, cooperation and collaboration opportunities, boosting the National Defence Economy.

The participation on the Industry Day is by invitation only. Participants will include NIAG representatives – from representatives of government, industry, associations and clusters, as well as NATO officials –, high-level representatives from the Portuguese government, Armed Forces, and other public and private entities, foreign representatives based in Portugal, as well as representatives from the Portuguese Defence Technological and Industrial Base.

CATARINA NUNES
Chair of the Board and CEO of idD Portugal Defence / Head of Delegation of Portugal to the NIAG

.

The internationalisation of the Portuguese Defence Economy is part of idD’s public mission and is one of the purposes of our participation in the NIAG. In this sense, with the NIAG’s annual meeting taking place in Portugal, this is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Industry and the National Scientific and Technological System and some of the main global players operating in defence.

The response to this event has been exceeding the expectations we had when we proposed to organise this meeting in our country. In the “Industry Day”, which will take place as a complement to the NIAG Plenary, around 30 national entities will exhibit, having the opportunity to present their solutions to the various delegations of NATO and partner countries, including to companies such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Leonardo, Navantia, Patria, Raytheon, Saab, or Thales, just to name some of the most well-known.

As a way of contributing to territorial cohesion, we decided to organise this initiative in the Northern Region, in partnership with the Municipality of Gaia.

We thank the Municipality of Gaia for their extraordinary support, and we hope that the event will open the path for new business and collaboration opportunities!

NIAG Chair

A defensive political and military Alliance like NATO not only needs to stay on the cutting edge of technology, but it also needs resilient infrastructure and reliable supply chains to remain effective and ensure the continuity of the Alliance’s activities.

It is in this dimension that the NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG), one of the Main Groups reporting to NATO’s Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD), provides a forum for discussion and information exchange allowing NATO, nations and industry to communicate on capability requirements and potential solutions, including on standards, interoperability and interchangeability.

Over three days, dozens of people from various NATO Member and NATO partner Countries and entities, from the Armed Forces, and from Industry, will share needs, discuss ideas and proposals, and identify opportunities for cooperation in various technological fields.

Holding this meeting in Portugal will allow participants to learn about some examples of the best that is done in terms of technology and industry in the country. We are excited to get in touch with this reality on the spot. And we hope that these days will result in fruitful partnerships for those who participate, underpinning our efforts to safeguard our nations, societies and shared values.

EDUARDO VÍTOR RODRIGUES

Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia

Promoting the attractiveness and economic development of Vila Nova de Gaia – the most populous municipality in the Porto Metropolitan Area and the northern region of the country, a territory with a young population and a thriving industry – is one of the main axes of intervention by the office I lead.

We understand that the defence industry is made up of a sophisticated business fabric, where companies are bigger, invest more in innovation and export more than the average and, therefore, generate more qualified and better paid work than the average.

Thus, when we were challenged to support the organisation of this NATO initiative, focused precisely on the relationship between defence and the economy, a topic that is more current than ever, we did not hesitate. This is the path that Vila Nova de Gaia shall follow.

The municipality is open and will support all initiatives that are committed to promoting qualified investment and that generate added value for the territory and for those who come or who want to come and build their lives here.

Come knock on our door, it is always open!”
