Identification of Funding Sources for R&D:
- We seek to identify funding sources for Research and Development (R&D) projects in the Defence field, driving the emergence of new entrepreneurial and technological initiatives.
Transfer of Scientific and Technological Knowledge:
- We encourage the transfer of knowledge between the scientific community and the business sector, fostering greater efficiency in the Research and Innovation (R&I) system and the creation of value in the development of new technologies and products for the Portuguese Armed Forces.
Contribution to Skilled Employment:
- We aim to contribute to the creation and maintenance of highly skilled jobs in Portugal.
Monitoring the Defence Economy:
- We monitor relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to study the development of the Defence Economy in Portugal.
We manage the equity investments held by the Portuguese State in companies within the Defence sector, exercising the shareholder function and promoting the implementation of sector-specific public policies.

- 18% ownership of EID – Empresa de Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Eletrónica, S.A.
- 17.5% ownership of Thales Edisoft Portugal, S.A.
This activity enables idD to maximize synergies among its investee companies through concrete actions such as:
- Enhancing the skills and capabilities of each company in relation to other invested companies, expanding strategic coordination, and creating value for the involved investee companies.
- Facilitating access to international markets with the aim of increasing business opportunities for domestic companies.
- Establishment of partnerships between invested companies and international entities.
- Promoting business opportunities through participation in international trade fairs.
Multisectoral Collaboration:
- We actively promote collaboration among the Armed Forces, businesses, universities, and research centers, driving innovation and dual-use applications.
Support for Internationalization:
- In partnership with related entities, we support companies in the Defence sector by organizing, preparing, and facilitating foreign visits and missions related to the Defence economy. Portugal assumes the role of a producer and exporter of technology and services in the field of Defence.
Stimulating Exports:
- We contribute to creating the necessary conditions for increasing exports by Portuguese companies operating in the Defence economy market, seeking to expand the reach of national companies on the international stage.
Smart Defence – Intelligent Platform for the Defence Economy:
- We drive the Smart Defence platform, which acts as a meeting point for entities such as the Ministry of National Defence, the Armed Forces, Portuguese companies, research centers, and other stakeholders in the Defence economy.
- The platform centralizes a range of business opportunities and facilitates connections and collaborations through its matchmaking system.
idD Portugal Defence is a company with exclusively public capital under the joint supervision of the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Finance.
